Teacher Turnover

One of the things that is that is most discouraging about education is the tremendous number of teachers who leave the profession within the first five years of entering the profession. It is estimated that 40-50 % of teachers leave the profession by the end of the 5th year in education. We have to wonder why there is such a turnover. Teaching certainly is more difficult today yet there are also additional services available to novice teachers from improved field experiences to mentoring, among other things; yet, the turnover continues.

What do we do - what can we do - to stem this tide? Not only is it expensive, it hurts schools and children - how much long range planning can be done - and carried out - when a school has the potential of such a huge turnover?
